SFUPB Releases New Affirmation Album and Launches New SFUPB.com Website

Posted on December 6th, 2009

The SFU Pipe Band is proud to release its 11th album, Affirmation, recorded at the band’s sold-out show at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall just three days before winning its sixth World Pipe Band Championship at Glasgow Green.

Pipe Major Terry Lee listed among the album’s highlights the band’s rendition of the piobaireachd ‘Field of Gold’, composed by Donald MacLeod, and the Mark Saul-composed suite, ‘Tir Nan Og’. Terry also cites the opening track, ‘Beaches of Harris’, as being “very powerful.”

“August 2009 was one of the best months in SFU’s history”, Terry Lee commented. “Playing before a packed house and recording the Affirmation CD on the Wednesday before the World’s was a thrill. Then to win our sixth World Championship three days later was a tremendous high point for us.”

The album, officially released on December 7th, is available at the band’s newly launched website, SFUPB.com, as well as at select retailers. Via the band’s online store, fans can purchase the album in a variety of formats, including cd, limited-edition autographed cd, MP3 album, and individual MP3 tracks.

On Monday, October 5th the SFU Pipe Band performed at the home opener of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks at a sold-out GM Place. The band, wearing Canucks jerseys, was introduced as the six-time and current World Pipe Band Champions, and received a warm welcome from the crowd.

The band performed a stripped down version of their ‘Beaches of Harris’ suite at centre ice prior to the opening faceoff and followed it up with a piece written by the Canucks’ musical director especially for the band. An extended version of this piece has been recorded by the band and is being played at select home games throughout the season. See a YouTube clip of the performance.
